Jarret Christmas Party 2005
Dec 12 - Members, friends, and family of Jarret gathered this past weekend to celebrate Christmas. Chief Engineer Dale Allen led the food-fest with his notable bar-b-que skills. Cheer and meriment prevailed. The pot-luck dinner filled everyone's stomach and for good measure. At around 21:30 hours Jarret has called to assist Southwest with a large dump fire. Strong winds and plenty of fuel led to a long night. Firefighters from 13 departments were called to battle the blaze, including Castroville, Devine, Natalia, La Coste, Lyle, Somerset, South Bexar, Geronimo Villiage, Lackland, Jarret, and Southwest.

Please visit our Jarret Chirstmas Party Photo Gallery, which includes over 80 photos from the event. Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Jarret Assists in Defensive Attack of Large Fire

Nov 5 - Piles of dried brush stacked up to 30 feet high and covering over 3 acres ignited on Saturday night in a dramatic fire. Jarret, along with Geronimo Village, Lytle, LaCoste, Helotes, and Somerset Fire Departments assisted Southwest VFD with this very large fire. Due to the intensive heat and abundant fuel supply firefighters took a defenseive approach, protecting nearby structures, isolating the fire by forming a fire break and starting a backburn to cut off the fire's fuel supply. Braving the intense heat, Jarret Firefigher Jesse Guajardo bulldozed a 15 - 20 foot firebreak around the fire, while various departments cooled the surrounding perimeter with their water streams. Water had to be continuously tanked to the scene, as there are no nearby fire hydants. Once the perimeter had been secured and stabilized, Southwest firefighters ignited a backburn, utilizing a favorable change in wind direction. The fire came to a safe and uneventful end due the combined efforts of all and masterful planning by the incident commanders.
Jarret responds to Restaurant Fire in Somerset

Nov 2 - The Taqueria Jalisco Restaurant on Somerset Road caught fire Wendsday afternoon. Jarret firefighters assisted Somerset VFD with the structure fire in downtown Somerset. The fire caused heavy damage to the Kitchen and surrounding areas. Jarret firefighters participated in the inital internal attack and ventilation of the structure. There was one fatality and at least three others were injured. Police said a left front tire of the bus apparently blew out, causing the vehicle to careen out of control on the busy highway.
Grass Fire in Bravo Estates Threatens Homes

Sept 24 - A large grass fire in Bravo Estates threatened several structures Saturday afternoon. Jarret, Somerset and Southwest Brush Trucks were able to stop the quickly moving blaze before any homes were consumed. Dry conditions, high tempuratures and high winds contributed to the speed of the fire. Due to these dangerous fire conditions, Bexar County is still under a burn ban.
Jarret Assists Southwest at Blackhawk Fire

Sept 23 - Jarret Firefighters joined Southwest, Lytle and Somerset at a multi-acre fire at the Blackhawk Firing Range. Battling through 100 degree heat and high winds kicked up from Hurricane Rita, firefighters were able to contain the fire which was threatening several homes. Due to the remote location water was tanked in. After nearly three hours of battling the fire, firefighters utilized a backhoe borrowed from Atascosa Rural Water Supply Company to further cool the smoldering aftermath with earth. One civilian was treated for fire related injuries and Bexar County Rehab made location to assist firefighters from getting heat-related injuries. This multi-department operation ran smoothly thanks to the coordination and training of the officers of the various departments.
Jarret Joins Von Ormy In Welcoming Mexican Relief Convoy

Sept 10 - Jarret Firefighters joined with local residents to welcome a Mexican Army convoy sent to help with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The historic event marked the first time since the Texas Revolution that the Mexican army was present in Von Ormy. In 1836, Santa Ana passed through Von Ormy, then known as Garza's Crossing, on his way to the Alamo. Santa Ana camped in nearby Lytle, where today you can visit the Santa Ana Oaks, marking the spot. Blas Herrera, the "Paul Revere of the Alamo", rode his horse from his ranch in Von Ormy to San Antonio to warn William Travis, Davey Crockett, Daniel Boone and the other Alamo defenders that the Mexican Army was near. Another Von Ormyian, Francisco Ruiz, was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and served as a Senator from Bexar in the Senate of the Republic of Texas. Many current residents of Von Ormy, including some Jarret firefighters are decendents of poineering Texan families. This time the Mexican army received a much nicer welcome; they brought two mobile cafeterias and mobile medical units and were headed through Von Ormy on their way to the Kelly AFB shelter. Also at the event, Chief Ortega and Assistant Chief Hood were interviewed by the Associated Press.
Three Jarret Medics Attend EMT Training

Sept 7 - Three Jarret ECA's will begin Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training this semester at San Antonio College, Assistant Chief Allison Hood, Captain Steve Flores and Firefighter Andrew Flores. Labor Day Structure Fire

Sept 5 - On Labor Day, Jarret responded to a structure fire on I-35 near Benton City Rd. Lytle and Southwest VFDs assisted with mutual aid. These dramatic photos were captured by Jarret Department Photographer Raymond Vara, Jr. and also made the front page of the Lytle Leader-News. Firefighters Joe Terrazas, John Ortega, Jr. and Stephen Flores made the initial attack. Engineers Dale Allen and Jesse Guajardo manned the pumps on Engine 1 and Engine 2 respectively. Jarret Fire Fighters Help Louisiana Refugees
Sept 3 - Several Jarret firefighters volunteered their time and medical skills this Labor Day weekend to help the Hurricane Katrina refugees which were streaming into San Antonio this weekend. Volunteers first began by clearing cubicles to make space at the old Kelley AFB. Cots were setup for the refugees and several medical, food and assistance stations were created. Once the refugees started coming in the Bexar County Fire Marshall sent out a request for volunteer medics, EMTs, ECAs, and Paramedics to help with medical care. Assistant Chief Allison Hood, FF/ECA Andrew Flores III, and Captain Calvin Lloyd were among those who volunteered their time and skills. Allison Hood is Jarret's training coordinator and serves as Treasurer.

Sept 1 - Jarret trainee Scott Christian turned 18 years old this month and was upgraded to full responding firefighter. Scott has been training with Jarret for about a year now and recently graduated from McCollum High School. Scott will attend San Antonio College this semster and join several other Jarret firefighters who are also attending college. In the past month, Scott has already completed Emergency Care Attendent and Emergency Vechicle Driving training. Welcome aboard Scott!
Jarret Receives Swift Water Rescue Training
July 11 - Jarret firefighters participated in Swift Water Rescue Training along the Guadalupe River this weekend. Swift water training is essential to safely rescue those trapped in our river systems and especially during flash floods.
Jarret Holds BT Sraining
July 6 - Jarret firefighters held a Brush Truck/Brush Fire training day. Brush fires are very common in Von Ormy, especially in the dry summer months and on the 4th of July and New Years Eve holidays. Engineer Dale Allen and Chief Ortega installed improvements on BT1 this year, including an automatic starter for the pump, new emergency running lights. Firefighers were trained on the new equipment and taught brush fire fighting techniques.

Happy Birthday America!
Jarret Responds to Killer Bee Attack
June 28 - Firefighters Allison Hood and Stephen Flores, using newly aquired bee suits, saved a great dane who was being attacked by killer bees. The new bee suits are a great improvement over our old equipment and allow firefighters to engage the frenzied hive without fear of being bitten. The great dane, who was hyperventalating due to hundreds of bee stings, was loaded onto the bed of a firefighter's pickup and driven a half-mile down the road to safety. Suprisingly, a few of the agressive bees found their way a half-mile away in pursuit of the canine intruder.
Jarret Mans First-Aid Station at Church Festival
June 28 - In what has become an annual tradition, Jarret Firefighters manned the First-Aid booth at the Sacred Heart Church Festival. At the festival medics responded to a fall resulting in an apparent broken ankle, while later engine one was called away to a veternary rescue. Firefighters Allison Hood and Stephen Flores, using newly aquired bee suits, saved a great dane who was being attacked by killer bees. Overall it was safe and successful festival. Jarret Holds Ladder Practice
June 14 - Jarret firefighters held an extensve ladder practice training session this week. Firefighters practiced various ladder maneuvers at Jarret Station, from simple removing and affixing ladders to the two engines to advanced passing maneuvers. Firefighters practiced going onto the roof of a structure, using a traditional and roof ladder in order to inspect and/or create horizontal ventilation. Horizontal ventilation is an advanced firefighting technique in which an escape vent is cut in the roof of a structure right above the source of a fire. This process allows heat, smoke and energy escape the structure and reduces the liklihood of flashover, slows the advance of the fire and prevents smoke damage in the rest of the structure.
Firefighters Rescue Entrapped Truck Driver
May 23 - An 18-wheeler carrying a cargo of onions collided with a garbage truck on northbound I-35 Monday. Both sides of the interstate were closed for several hours. One driver was trapped in the cab of his trailer. Jarret and Southwest firefighters extricated the driver using the jaws-of-life and the driver was transported to the hospital via AirLife helicopter. The rescue photo shows Jarret firefighters, Jesse Guajardo, Dale Allen, John Ortega, Sr., Southwest firefighter Mike Nolan and AMR EMS personnel. The dramatic rescue photograph was captured by Jarret photographer Raymond, Vara, Jr.

EMT Silva is also a Graduate Student in Political Science at UTSA and a proud alumnus of DePaul University. (Go Blue Demons!) The community of Von Ormy is very fortunate to have EMT Silva in their department.
Jarret and Southwest Sign Contracts with Emergency Services District
May 19 - The Jarret and Southwest Fire Departments signed contracts with Bexar County Emergency Services District #5 (ESD)at the May 19th public meeting. Both departments will receive $2500 per month from the District to help cover expenses. This is an increase from the $1000 per month Jarret received from Bexar County last year, but still does not cover the department's monthly expenses. Please continue to contribute to the Volunteer Department and support our fund raisers! The ESD also has provided general liability and vehicle insurance and workman's compensatin insurance to the departments. These financial suppliments will allow us to redistribute funds for much needed new equipment and training. Somerset and Lytle Fire Departments signed contracts with the ESD earlier in the year. ESD 5 gets its funding from a property tax on landowner in the district.
Jarret Celebrates St. Florian's Day
May 15 - Jarret firefighters celebrated the feast day of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, with the congregation of Sacred Heart Church in Von Ormy. Fr. Rudy Carolla, Jarret's Honorary Chaplain, presided and various firefighters assisted with readings. St. Florian medals were given out to the children and the fire trucks were present for an "open house". St. Florian was a Roman Soldier/Firefighter who was martyred under the Christian persecutions of Diocletion. His courage in the face of being burned alive has led him to be adopted by firefighters as their patron saint.
Sparks Rain Down At Local Gas Station
May 14 - Jarret firefighters responded to a service station fire at the corner of Loop 1604 and I-35. A lighting fixture was raining down sparks onto the ground near the fuel pumps. The origin appeared to be electrical as once the circuit breaker was shut off the sparks ceased. Jarret Chief Ortega and Captain Ortega inspected the roof for fire damage and hot spots. None were found. The property damage was minimal and operations at the gas station resumed with the affected lights remaining off.
Killer Bee Attack in Von Ormy
May 12 - Jarret firefighters battled a swarm of suspected Aficanized "killer" bees on Thursday. The swarm had nested under a sheet of plywood lying on the ground. Two dogs and a horse were attacked by the highly agreesive hive. The dogs did not survive the attack, but firefighters agressively fought back the swarm while guiding the horse 60 yards to an awaiting trailer and safety. The horse was transported to receive emergency veternary care. Firefighters sustained a few minor stings. Fire Chief John Ortega commented, "I've never seen such an agressive swarm before." The general appearance of "Killer" Bees is the same as common Honey Bees, but they are more dangerous because they attack intruders in numbers much greater than European Honey Bees. Since their introduction into Brazil, they have killed some 1,000 humans, with victims receiving ten times as many stings than from the European strain. They react to disturbances ten times faster than European Honey Bees, and will chase a person a quarter of a mile. (Source: Encyclopedia Smithsonian)
Jarret Station Gets Expansion
May 10 - New construction began today on an expansion to Jarret's Benton City Road Station. The new room will provide expanded living quarters for firefighters. Engineer Dale Allen designed the building plans and led the construction team, which consisted of firefighter volunteers. The new room will create an additional 225 square feet and will free up another 200 square feet for training/meeting space. Construction should be completed by the end of the week. Come by and see!
18 Wheeler/Pickup MVA
May 9 - Jarret Medics and Firefighters resonded to an early morning motor vehicle accident when a trackor-trailer carrying Kool-Aid and Oatmeal collided with a pickup in the northbound lanes of I-35 near Loop 1604. The vehicles ended up in the grassy median between the interstate and the access road. Traffic was blocked on the access road for over an hour as responders secured the scene. Jarret EMT Jacqueline Silva, noted "Luckily none of the patients sustained serious injuries, but it would have been hard to guess that from just looking at the twisted and tangled wreckage left behind. This is anorther testiment to the life saving effect of wearing seat belts."
Jarret Battles Brush Fire
May 7 - Jarret firefighters responded to a raging grass fire in the early evening along I-35 between the main highway and the access road. Asst. Chief Allison Hood reported that the "fire was of unknown origin". The fire scortched the roadside but due to the swift response of Jarret Engine 1 and Brush Truck 1 there were no structures or motorists threatened. May begins the traditional brush/wildland fire season, please be cautious not to throw lit cigarette butts and to keep alert of county burn bans by checking this site frequently.

ESD Negotiations Ongoing
April 11 - Jarret is still in contract negotiations with Emergency Service District #5. Jarret has not received any compensation for its services since December 2004. Recently the District has cut off negotiations and offered us a "take it or leave it" contract. We have some reservations about certain clauses in the contract and these concerns have been independently confirmed by three Professors at St. Mary's School of Law. We are doing our best to keep running with no income from the County or District, by keeping our expenses at a minimum and there is no danger that service will stop anytime soon. Our volunteers do an amazing job responding to calls and are very resourceful. Please show your support for us at the next public ESD meeting, Thursday, April 21st, 7PM at the Atascosa Rural Water Supply Company. (Jarratt Rd and Old Pearsall Rd.) Please help us in our time of need, so we can help you in your time of need.
Major Accident on I-35
April 10 - A pickup driving the wrong way on I-35 caused a multiple vehicle accident on I-35 Saturday morning. The driver of the pickup and two others were fatally injured. Jarret Firefighters, using the Jaws-of-Life, extricated one patient entrapped in his car. A tractor-trailer carrying broccoli burst into flame after trying to avoid the accident. Firefighters also prepared a landing zone for the “Air Life” helicopter, on the I-35 access road, which transported one patient.
