Residents of unincorporated areas of Bexar County can now dispose of their Household Hazardous Waste at their doorsteps via free door-to-door Collections.
Residents of unincorporated areas of Bexar County can now call for a free home pickup of household hazardous waste. This program will focus on collecting items that cannot be recycled locally and should not be placed in the trash: paint, paint thinners, car batteries, used oil, pesticides, poisons, spray cans and antifreeze and more. However, home pickup is not available for ammunition, medical waste, nuclear/radioactive waste, explosives or commercial chemicals.
To participate, eligible residents can simply dial 1-800-HHW-PKUP (1-800-449-7587) and request a collection. Participation is limited to one collection per year per residence. Upon receiving a resident's call, Curbside Inc. representatives will verify their eligibility, explain how the program works and what is collected, and schedule a pick-up date. Prior to the collection date, Curbside will send the resident a collection Kit that can hold up the most hazardous chemicals securely inside. Detailed instructions for using the Kit will be included. When necessary, Curbside will provide seniors and people with disabilities in-home assistance in preparing and packing their materials for collection.
"In introducing this service, we are responding to widespread interest from the County's residents for a safe, convenient and environmentally responsible approach for removing household hazardous materials from their homes," said Renee D. Green, P.E., Director of Environmental Services. "This program will ensure that household chemicals are recycled if possible, and safely disposed of if they can't be recycled. This will minimize the impact of these chemicals on our landfills and protect our environment", Ms. Green added.
This pilot project is funded by a grant thru the Alamo Area Council of Governments. The County has contracted with Curbside Inc. to develop and implement this Door-to-Door Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Program. The contractor will manage customer service and operations functions. Curbside Inc. has been managing similar residential collection programs for several years serving 200 cities and counties across the United States and safely completing more than 100,000 household hazardous waste collections.
