Bexar County ESD #5

In 2004, local reisdents voted to create Bexar County Emergency Services District #5 (ESD #5), which includes Jarret VFD, Somerset VFD, Southwest VFD, and Lytle VFD. ESDs were authorized by the State Legislature as a means to better provide public funding for suburban and rural emergency service agencies. The ESD is a political subdivision of the State with the power to impose a small property tax (tax not to exceed 10 cents per $100 of taxable property), own property needed for its functions, and enter into contracts. Volunteer Fire Departments still maintain their independent non-profit status under an ESD, but the ESD provides additional resources to promote the highest level of Fire Protection possible.

ESD #5 is defined as an area bounded on the west by the Bexar County Medina County boundary line; on the south by the Bexar County – Atascosa County boundary line and the Bexar centerline of Applewhite Road; and on the north by the city limits of San Antonio and U.S. Interstate Highway 90 West. Bexar County ESD #5 meetings are held monthly and are open to the public. For information regarding upcoming ESD meetings, please contact Dana Townsend the District Administrative Assistant at (210) 622-3901 or visit their website at http://www.esd5.com.
